Subtasks & Checklists

Not every step needs to be its own task. My First Task gives you both: real subtasks for work that needs an owner and a due date, and simple checklist items for everything smaller.

How It Works

01

Break down a large task into subtasks

Each subtask is a full task in its own right — its own assignee, due date, priority, and status — nested under its parent.

02

Or add checklist items for smaller steps

A lightweight, ordered checklist lives inside the task itself for steps that don't need independent tracking.

03

Track completion either way

A parent task's progress reflects both its subtasks and its checklist, so nothing gets marked done early.

Why It Matters

Matches the granularity of the tracking to the actual size of the work
Avoids a board flooded with tiny one-line tasks that don't need their own due date
Subtasks can be assigned to someone other than the parent task's owner
Checklists keep a clear, ordered record of the steps inside a single task

Frequently Asked Questions

How many levels of subtasks can I nest?

Subtasks nest one level under a parent task — deep enough to break work down without turning the board into a maze.

Do checklist items support due dates or assignees?

No — checklist items are intentionally lightweight. If a step needs its own owner or due date, make it a subtask instead.

Does completing all subtasks auto-complete the parent?

The parent task's status is set independently, so you decide when the overall task is actually done.
